Scanning Fragments to Rebuild Ancient History

A team of Italian researchers are taking broken artifacts from the ruins of Pompeii and are attempting to restore them using an intelligent robotic system and Polyga’s Compact C210 3D scanner. The system will scan large samples of fragments to put into a digital database to help prevent damage and to aid in future artifact research.

Scanning Large Volume of Objects for Documentation

University of Western Ontario’s Sustainable Archaeology Animation Unit (SAAU) leveraged four Polyga 3D scanners to create color 3D digital archives of large archaeological collections. By capturing the true likeness of artifacts, researchers, students, and the public have access to them without ever having to step foot into a museum.

Optimizing the Design Process

Brooks Sports wanted to move their physical-based shoe samples to the digital realm. This would allow Brook’s shoe designers to see their changes in near real-time, at a fraction of the cost and time compared to conventional method. FlexScan3D’s photogrammetry data alignment, combined with turntable and high-resolution color texture capture option, made our 3D scanner an ideal scanning solution for this product visualization project.

Measuring with Precise Accuracy for Scientific Research

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in collaboration with the University of Miami, studied the impact of light and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) on Staghorn coral. This is the first study the researchers are aware of that used 3D scanning to measure the growth rate of living corals. The corals were not harmed during the scanning process as each coral was exposed to the air for a maximum of one minute.
